New sustainable accommodation and facilities support students with ceremonial training in Catterick

A £5.5m investment has delivered 112 new sustainable bedspaces and a new drill shed at Vimy Barracks in Catterick Garrison, North Yorkshire, to support personnel attending courses at the Army School of Ceremonial.

The two new modular accommodation blocks, which were opened last week by the Commander of the Army’s North Region, Col Peter Stitt, will house students as they take part in courses designed to develop their ceremonial skills.

"I am delighted to to open the new sustainable short-term training accommodation blocks for ITC Catterick, which have been delivered as part of the Army's ongoing investment to improve living conditions for our people. The speed of delivery has been very impressive, and the high-quality of this modern and well-designed accommodation demonstrates the Army's enduring commitment to providing infrastructure that our serving personnel need and deserve".

The two blocks were delivered jointly with Reds10, who are off-site construction specialist, and have been configured in the same way as the MOD's award-winning Net-Zero Carbon Accommodation Programme (NetCAP) buildings that have been built on the Defence Training Estate.

"I am delighted that we have been able to support the delivery of these new facilities here at Vimy Barracks. The sustainable designs of the accommodation blocks will continue to contribute towards defence's Net Zero targets and ultimately enhance the Army's capability".

Neil Hague, DIO's Senior Project Manager, Army Single Living & Short Course Accommodation

The 112 bedspaces are configured in two and three-person occupancy rooms, and each building can be separated into four distinct and secure occupancy areas. The buildings include separate bathrooms, drying rooms, and other facilities like an outside boot wash.

A variety of innovative green measures have also been included in the buildings; these include solar panels on the roof, air source heat pumps, and a rainwater harvesting system SMART building technology has also been added, which optimises energy use and provides data for improvement, saving energy and reducing maintenance costs.

"We are extremely proud to have played a key role in the delivery of these new sustainable accommodation blocks at Vimy Barracks. This project highlights our commitment to supporting the MOD's ambitious Net Zero goals while ensuring that our armed forces have access to high-quality, energy-efficient facilities. The innovative design and construction of these buildings will provide service personnel with a modern and sustainable environment to support their ceremonial training, cotributing directly to enhancing their operational readiness".

Phil Cook, Defence Director, Reds10
