Shaping the Future of Construction: An Apprenticeship Journey

To celebrate the final day of National Apprenticeship Week, we’re thrilled to highlight one of our Quantity Surveying Degree Apprentices, Freya Rutt.

In this Q&A, Freya shares her journey at Reds10 so far, from choosing an apprenticeship over a traditional university route to working on exciting projects alongside industry professionals. Her experience reflects the value of hands-on learning and the support she’s received along the way, helping to shape her career in construction.

Q1: What inspired you to pursue an apprenticeship instead of a traditional university route?

Freya: I decided to pursue an apprenticeship to gain hands-on experience right from the beginning. I felt that learning directly from professionals in the field would help me accelerate my career and gain a deeper understanding of the job, rather than just learning the theory.

Q2: Why did you choose Reds10 for your apprenticeship?

Freya: I chose Reds10 for my apprenticeship because it’s such an innovative, fast-growing company. Modular construction really excites me, due to the efficiency, sustainability, and use of cutting-edge techniques. Working here gives me the chance to be part of projects that are pushing the boundaries of traditional construction, and I’m excited to learn and grow in that kind of environment.

Q3: How do you balance on-the-job learning with your studies?

Freya: Balancing on-the-job learning with my studies can be challenging at times. I make sure to prioritise tasks and set aside time for studying when needed. What helps a lot is that my manager is supportive and understanding, Rani always helps me out and gives me the opportunity for study days should I need them.

Q4: Can you share a project you’ve worked on that you found particularly rewarding?

Freya: One project that I found particularly rewarding is the build of Wombourne High School. Being involved in a complex project has given me the chance to apply my knowledge in a real-world setting. It has been very fulfilling to see how the team’s efforts are coming together to create something impactful for the community.

Q5: What advice would you give to someone considering an apprenticeship in construction?

Freya: If you’re considering an apprenticeship in construction, my biggest piece of advice would be to ask as many questions as possible right from the start. There’s no such thing as a stupid question and asking helps you learn faster and avoid mistakes. The more you ask, the more you’ll understand, and it really helps you build your confidence in the role.

Q6: How do you see your career progressing after your apprenticeship?

Freya: After finishing my degree and gaining my chartership, I see my career progressing with the goal of eventually working abroad. Reds10 has given me a strong foundation in the industry, and I’m excited to continue developing my skills and exploring new opportunities as I move forward.

Q7: What has been your biggest takeaway from your time at Reds10 so far?

Freya: The collaborative environment here has really shown me how valuable it is to work alongside experienced professionals who are willing to share their knowledge. I’ve learned so much not just about the technical side of the work, but also about how to approach challenges, communicate effectively, and adapt to new situations. It’s given me a solid foundation to build my career on.
