Temporary Classrooms

Clevedon School is a large secondary school serving 1,200 pupils from Years 7–14, alongside a 240 place sixth form. The estate comprises 15 buildings constructed between 1971 and 2020.

In 2023, the discovery of high alumina cement concrete (HACC) in the EFAC building required the immediate closure of 22 classrooms. As an emergency measure, temporary Learning Village marquees were installed on site. While these structures enabled teaching to continue, they were not suitable for long term use due to limited durability, thermal performance, and operational resilience.

To restore safe, high quality teaching accommodation, Reds10 was appointed to deliver a robust, fully compliant temporary modular block, ensuring continuity for pupils and staff while medium and long term school estate plans advance.

DELIVERING A FUTURE READY TEMPORARY SOLUTION

Reds10 installed the new temporary accommodation directly adjacent to the old marquees, within the existing school site boundary. The completed building provides:

  • 24 general teaching classrooms
  • Staff spaces
  • Group rooms
  • Toilet facilities
  • Fully compliant access routes and building layouts

The new accommodation allows Clevedon School to operate effectively with stable, warm and secure learning spaces, significantly improving conditions for students who had been learning in marquees since 2023.

Designed with a neutral aesthetic, the exterior incorporates evenly distributed windows across both floors to maximise natural daylight and create a welcoming, consistent appearance.

DESIGN & LAYOUT HIGHLIGHTS

Site Responsive Placement

The school is bordered by an area of ancient woodland. Reds10 carefully positioned the temporary block to ensure full protection of the woodland’s root protection zone, maintaining compliance and safeguarding ecological value.

Accessibility and Integration

The building is fully compliant with Part M of the Building Regulations, including accessible entrances, routes and facilities. It also ties seamlessly into the school’s existing access strategy to minimise operational disruption.

SUSTAINABILITY AT THE HEART OF THE BUILD

Clevedon School’s temporary accommodation was designed to achieve Net Zero Carbon for regulated energy, meeting the DfE’s sustainability expectations.

Key features include:

  • A fabric first approach with high performance insulation and airtight construction
  • Low energy mechanical and electrical systems
  • Air source heat pumps providing efficient all electric heating
  • Photovoltaic panels (PV) supporting on site renewable energy generation

This ensures the building operates efficiently, reduces running costs, and offers a comfortable teaching environment year round.

NAVIGATING COMPLEXITY TO RESTORE TEACHING SPACE

Replacing marquee classrooms within a live school environment required coordinated planning, controlled logistics and clear communication with the school and the Futura Learning Partnership.

By doing so, Reds10 restored essential teaching capacity quickly and safely, giving Clevedon School a stable operational foundation as longer term estate strategies are developed.

The project team:

  • Managed installation during term time with stringent safety measures
  • Coordinated works alongside daily school operations
  • Ensured seamless transition from marquees to high quality classrooms
  • Delivered a solution aligned with DfE and school requirements
