Located in the heart of West Carclaze Garden Village in Cornwall, Sky Primary and Eden Project Nursery represents a significant investment in sustainable education. Commissioned by the Department for Education (DfE) and delivered for Kernow Learning Trust in partnership with Cornwall Council, the £13m+ project was designed by Sense of Space Architects with technical advice from Arcadis. The two-storey building spans 1,750m² and accommodates 210 pupils alongside a 26-place nursery. Construction began on site in April 2024, with factory works starting in June 2024. Reds10 achieved handover in August 2025, enabling the school to open its doors in September 2025.

Delivering a Future-Ready Learning Environment

Reds10 successfully delivered Sky Primary and Eden Project Nursery as a key component of the wider West Carclaze Garden Village development. The school was designed to integrate seamlessly with the surrounding community, supporting sustainable transport through dedicated footpaths and cycleways. Using Modern Methods of Construction (MMC), Reds10 completed 87% of the build off-site, ensuring a faster, more efficient programme with minimal disruption to residents.

Design and Layout Highlights

The internal layout of the school was carefully planned to create a flexible and inspiring learning environment. It includes six general classrooms, a nursery classroom, and a reception classroom, complemented by specialist spaces for Food, Science, and Design Technology. A library and a main hall with servery and PE store provide additional facilities for pupils and staff.

Externally, the school features soft landscaping with native tree planting, varied grass areas, and a dedicated habitat study zone to encourage outdoor learning. Informal hard playgrounds connect seamlessly with internal classrooms, while a fenced Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) and grass playing field support physical education. A soft landscape buffer around the perimeter offers shade, shelter, and green views. The building’s exterior combines local stone at the lower level with fibre cement panels and metal cladding above, delivering durability while reflecting regional character.

Sustainability at the Heart of the Build

Sky Primary and Eden Project Nursery was designed to be net-zero in operation, meeting the Department for Education’s Spec21 guidance. Reds10 incorporated air source heat pumps for heating, photovoltaic (PV) panels and windcatchers on the roof, and passive design strategies to optimise energy efficiency. These measures ensure the building operates sustainably while reducing long-term energy costs.

Overcoming Challenges for On-Time Delivery

Despite changes to the project scope midway through construction, Reds10 maintained programme integrity and delivered a high-quality, future-proofed learning environment on time and to specification. The school opened in September 2025, ready to serve the growing community of West Carclaze Garden Village.
